Big Foot and Barbecue Wedges (Fries)

Whoa…my sister had her 35 week ultrasound yesterday and posted the shot of her firstborn’s foot/the first nephew. Whoa, holy cow, oh good god- that’s pretty much what anyone would say. It’s huge!

His papa has big feet. I don’t know if he knows this but when my bro-in-law was at my parent’s house years ago, I put his shoes on and walked around-tried to anyway. I wear a women’s size 6 or men’s size 4 and his shoe size is 12/13 or something close.

It’s not that the baby is that big-he’s 6lbs. 3oz. with a due date of August 9th. I don’t know, is that big at 35 weeks? Geesh, his feet are enormous!

My mom also redecorated her kitchen and sent me a pic. It looks great (like always) with a cute border that goes well with her new Paula Deen blue cookware. My mom is a decorating master and it’s tradition that she move the furniture at least 15 times and paint or redecorate either the bathroom or kitchen every year. Dad just shakes his head and goes with it. So it’s not that often that she redecorates. Just kidding, lady! She painted my expecting sister’s house over the past few months to get a fix/help out but it must have jolted her inner artist, thus carrying inspiration to her house. She loves projects and I can’t say I blame her, I’m dying for a project-a huge, too much on my plate project.

By the way, sis, what will our nephew’s name be? They resorted to calling him Junior and so that’s what we’ve been calling him but I hear they have a name picked out.

My mom really does move the furniture quite a few times a year. Coming home from college on most weekends, I could count on something being in a different place. I swear she must have the strength of 3 people to move the couch and tv cabinet. She probably juggles it on the tip of her finger while vacuuming and when she hears someone coming, sets it down and smiles at us, seconds before being caught. I’m onto you!

She is great at putting a room together and I’m pretty sure I take after her when it comes to our love of finding the right piece (in our budgets) and accessorizing. I came home last winter and we both had bought the exact same top and when they came to visit that fall, we had the same sweater.

Along with the photo of the new kitchen was a shot of my dad in padding, gallbladder removal surgery scar and all. The pads are for his newest hobby, roller skiing. If you knew my dad, you would wonder what in the world is that about. These are the skis on wheels you can see people using on sidewalks and roadways. Greg and I want to try it out. The last hobby my dad wanted to do was lab retriever training and knowing my dad, he still wants to do it. With the healing process, none of these things can happen for months, if that. Did I mention my dad’s 50th birthday is in November? This could be, as our family teases, his mid-life crisis.

My love of Real Simple is going to be displayed yet again today with barbecue fries (more like wedges). This recipe appealed to me with the addition of barbecue sauce which I happen to have in the fridge (Sweet Baby Rays). However, with all of the ingredients/spice added to the wedges, we thought they would come out with more flavor but it was faint. It was still tasty yet, surprising. I think the cooking temp was a bit high at 450F and would recommend reducing it to 425F with a longer cooking time. The barbecue sauce can easily burn on the wedge so keep these on the middle rack in the oven and keep an eye on them. You can make your own sauce, here’s my recipe. I wouldn’t call these my favorite but they deserve a try.

Barbecue Wedges (Fries) from Real Simple
Serves 4

Ingredients:
5 tbsp olive oil
6 tbsp barbecue sauce
½ to 1 tsp hot sauce (I used more)
½ tsp paprika
¼ tsp ground cumin
pepper
2 lbs. Russet potatoes, scrubbed
sour cream-optional for dipping

Preheat the oven to 425F. Drizzle 1 tbsp of oil on a large rimmed baking sheet. This could take 2 sheets. In a large bowl, add the remaining oil, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, paprika, cumin and pepper.

Cut each potato lengthwise into 8 to 10 wedges. Add them to the bowl and toss to coat. Spread the wedges in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake, turning once, until golden and tender, 30 to 35 minutes. Serve with sour cream.

    1. It’s Big Foot Senior, my brother-in-law! Just how many females put on your shoes? Your feet are on the larger side, hate to break it to you.
